J.C. Frey is a co-founder and the managing partner overseeing the Firm’s energy marketable securities activities. Mr. Frey is one of the longest tenured portfolio managers in the midstream energy space and currently oversees approximately $9 billion in assets consisting of the equity and debt securities of energy infrastructure companies including MLPs and marine transportation companies, as well as other energy issuers.
Mr. Frey joined the firm in 1997 and has held various positions including research analyst, co-portfolio manager and portfolio manager. He has been the portfolio manager of the largest and longest tenured MLP hedge fund, Kayne Anderson MLP Fund, L.P. (KAMLP), since its inception in 2000. Mr. Frey was instrumental in the creation and initial public offering of Kayne Anderson MLP Investment Company (NYSE: KYN), the largest publicly traded MLP-focused closed-end fund in the market today. He is co-founding partner of Kayne Anderson Fund Advisors and is responsible for public investments for KYN, as well as Kayne Anderson Energy Total Return Fund (NYSE: KYE), Kayne Anderson Energy Development Company (NYSE: KED), and Kayne Anderson Midstream/Energy Fund (NYSE:KMF), public funds which he helped create in 2005, 2006, and 2010 respectively. Additionally, Mr. Frey manages several other co-mingled partnerships and separate accounts on behalf of a distinguished list of high net worth, family offices and institutional clients.
Several of the funds managed by Mr. Frey have been nominated as finalists for the MarHedge Annual US Performance Awards as well as regular BarclayHedge monthly performance award winners and recently named as one of the top energy fund performers by Bloomberg.
Prior to joining Kayne Anderson in 1997, Mr. Frey was an audit manager in KPMG Peat Marwick’s financial services group, specializing in banking and finance clients, and loan securitizations. Mr. Frey is a Certified Public Accountant and earned a B.S. in Accounting from Loyola Marymount University in 1990 and a Master of Taxation from the University of Southern California in 1991.
